SLIDING SCALE FAQs
“When I pay more, I know that I am helping the artist support themselves.
When I pay in the middle, I know I am helping the artist cover costs.
And when I pay at the bottom, I know I am letting my community hold me and support me.
All of these are acceptable ways of participating.”
What is a sliding scale?
Sliding scale pricing offers variable prices for products or services that are based on what a customer is able to pay and their overall financial circumstances.
Where do I fall on the sliding scale?
I price my work at the “true amount” I believe the piece is worth, factoring cost of materials, time, packaging, marketing, and my skill level. I am working toward a place where my art supports itself and ideally myself.
So consider paying the price listed or higher on the scale if you:
can comfortably meet all your basic needs
can save up over time
can afford travel or time off
work part-time by choice
have access to family money, time, or resources
are white, cis, or able-bodied
have received higher education
We all live with levels of privilege and oppression that are reflected in our economic circumstances.
So please consider paying lower on the scale if you:
have no or limited expendable income
are a person who experiences discrimination and/or violence related to systematic oppression
identify as Black, Indigenous, First Nations, and/or a person of color
are an unpaid community organizer
rely on public assistance
are a sex worker who experiences occupational discrimination
have medical expenses, been denied work, or experience discrimination related to ableism
have immigration-related expenses
Why use sliding scale pricing?
I believe art is a necessity, especially during heavy times where we could use a reminder of the beauty humans are capable of creating and experiencing. This is why I want my art to be accessible to all levels of income and economic circumstances.
